While the Christmas season may be over that doesn’t mean music has to be selective and reviewed according to the season. Sarantos is a DIY musician that creates a catalog of tracks within this two disco set. Not only does Sarantos happen to have a talent for taking a traditional holiday and create a specter of original taste. Typically by the end of December the majority of people cannot wait to say goodbye to the catchy tunes and looking forward to Spring. However what makes Sarantos stand out in a sea of the usual artists you hear covering Christmas songs is that, he offers a sort of doo wop crooner that feels a shade away from the back beat of The Shangri Las. While more than the half the population has heard Bing Crosby or Michael Buble’s Christmas albums, actually finding a distinct voice that can stand outside of the rest is a reassuring aspect.

On his website, Sarantos Melogia talks about his back catalog of over 2,000 songs he’s stockpiled since the age of four and how he expects to release a new song every month until he dies. Even a brief reading of his biography makes it clear that writing and performing music brings great joy into Melogia’s life, but validates him as well. This is an album, not a psychological, review, but when a songwriter emphasizes the personal nature of his songwriting to such a degree, they make discussing it inescapable. Not Where I Want to Be, as the title implies, is the work of a young man forever engaged in self-reflection and Melogia is learning how to transform that trait into art.

Casey Weston is a singer/songwriter/vocalist from Florida who just released her latest CD entitled “Young Heart” (2014). An original blender of sound mixing Adelle, Vanessa Carlton, Lisa Loeb, Paula Cole, Beth Orton, Sara Bareilles and Delta Rae this CD delviers the goods. Visually I must admit she delivers a very pure “non-superficial” look. Weston can be described as minimalist pop with rock, blues, country and dance pop influences, and includes one song with another vocalist; Track 6 “No Strings Attached” (Featuring Amber Carrington). This album is no doubt the fruit of a life’s journey and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You can tell by listening to real music by the impression it makes on the world and by the footprint it leaves behind. Sometimes it can come out in a passionate vocal line, a social movement, or a song that is played or sung with emotional bewilderment. The new album by Bill McBirnie and Bruce Jones entitled “Grain of Sand” is a non-stop homage to heart-tugging sexy urban-jazz, as I like to call it. Making use of every emotion in the book, it’s hard not to find something you’ll like on this 14 track collection. The first 3 tracks “Grain of Sand”, “Se Us Fico Com Voce” and “Quando A Chuva Cai” pretty much sums it all up. The lead off title track gets the party started right with easy going vibe that really keep the essence of the music refined but somewhat impassioned. As the CD progresses it doesn’t take long to see that’s not what McBirnie is all about though. He plays the flute like an experienced professional. Who’s that singing? I like how McBirnie and Jones let it all hang out on vocals. Sometimes you don`t need too much to create something high quality and powerful. I’ve often heard the term “Keep it Simple Stupid”. Keeping this in mind there’s no over the top musical theatrics on “Grain of Sand.” In this aspect McBirnie & Jones keep it in the fairway but pull it off flawlessly. What you see is what you get with these two is big win that is stunning as much as it is marketable. There is definitely a mood assigned to each song. My ears picked up to the vocal style right away, a pretty common tongue and cheek playing style for this kind of mood music. When delivered in the right manner it can become almost intoxicating and yes sexy. McBirnie has soul. Add in the vocals - that will literally make you want to dance. All songs are delivered with eloquently, emotion and conviction and you will come to understand why McBirnie is turning ears. The playing style from McBirnie & Jones just flows so well almost like a ship lost at sea. I’ve only heard a handful of players execute this style well – and Miles Davis is one of them.

DogHouse Swine’s latest EP, named “Fearless,” is a fantastic starting point for those who are new to the band, introducing listeners to the group’s particular approach to punk rock. Opening track, the eponymous “Fearless,” sets the tone accordingly. Not content to sit still for a second, the band blasts straight into a vicious punk party. While many listeners might be thinking ‘so far, so good,’ the band drops a sudden gear shift, dropping into a slower middle eight and showing the audience that they are entirely in their element. Shifting back to the original style for the closer of the song, the repeated words “never sell my soul for you” reintroduces the song to the audience with a nod to the age-old punk mythos. As introductions go, it is a fitting one.
