Lyrics inspired by ordinary experiences, nature, and an adventurous spirit round out Restrepo’s latest 14 track effort “Lonely Hearts Club” released in 2015. While the straight forward lyrics and impressive musical talent seem to reach far beyond Restrepo’s young look, an unmistakable and pulsating youthful energy permeates his songs. There is a certain fearlessness in the music, a diving in and pushing forward that reflect another side of this multi-talented young artist. Marco Antonio Restrepo (born October 22, 1989), formerly known by his stage name A.Tone Da Priest, is an American musician, and record producer from Atlanta, GA. He is currently signed to his own record label Farsyde Entertainment.

The mysterious duo Mirage Box from Orlando, Florida have released their first EP “Contents Under Pressure” under the label “Growlyman Endeavors”. Why mysterious you’d ask? Because it’s a mystery how such a genius band could remain largely unnoticed with less than 1000 likes on their Facebook page. Please, consider making the world a better place by correcting this mistake!

The men behind the music, Nick Coppola and Chris Capozza have invented their personal style called “modern retro”. This definition is surprisingly accurate – the influence of a variety of bands from different epochs can be heard in “Contents Under Pressure”.  There’s something for everyone – from the happy-go-lucky playful vibe of The Beatles, through the exciting Jimmy Page-esque guitar solos, to the riffs that possess that certain musical rawness of grunge bands like Soundgarden. We could call Nick Coppola the brain and Chris Capozza the muscle of this collaboration. Nick is the lyricist and songwriter of Mirage Box, while Chris is responsible for the recording and producing (he’s a talented multi-instrumentalist, an audio engineer and producer).

This Canadian outfit, helmed by the singer/songwriter of the same name, has released a debut EP, Changin’ Gears, aimed squarely at the “roots music” audience, particularly those who admire retro country music. It’s fair to describe five of the album’s six songs as rockabilly or country music pastiches, but they never spoof the form. Instead, the backing band gives Changin’ Gears an immediate access point for listeners. People coming to this album expecting to find charming, entertaining songs about real life joys and struggles will be pleased. Anyone hoping for more will be disappointed.

One would probably never suspect Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to be the starting point for dance/electronica…however Scott A.F. has rose up into our line of sight.  With his new EP Under Your Skin that recently was sent to his Kickstarter backers that helped fund this very project, shouldn’t be too worry about Scott failing at anything. Another name came to mind when I heard this EP, Conor Maynard who very much like Scott found a calling towards a more up-tempo beat that can go incredibly wrong if it is not done right. Yet Under Your Skin invokes a proper introduction to the rhythm and style that Scott gives across. The doubt was lifted the moment I heard my inner monologue say “Yeah, if this were to come on the radio, I would now exactly who this was.”

Veteran artists enjoy some rewards, but they frequently pale in comparison to the minefield they navigate attempting to stay relevant. Anytime out of the spotlight is a further problem. Bunny Sigler has enjoyed critical and widespread fan respect since his debut in the late 1950’s, but legendary status doesn’t buy anyone continued commercial appeal. The story of the music business is always a narrative of change, but certain truths hold. Popular song of every stripe is a young person’s art consumed, predominantly, by the young and anything past thirty is little more than a well-preserved, hopefully, relic.
