The twenty-plus album and Grammy honored career of Sweet Honey in the Rock revs up once more with the release of their first new studio album in nearly ten years, Love in Evolution. The uninitiated will quickly understand, seconds in perhaps, this isn’t a group concerned with chart or financial success. True artistry is hard to find in today’s marketplace, but it depends on how you define it. Only fools would dispute that there’s no artistry at all in writing three-minute pop songs, but there’s multiple levels. Until a few years ago, Danny Click was one of Austin’s best-kept secrets, a musician’s musician who’d won the respect of some of alt-country’s biggest names but hadn’t yet found widespread recognition. That changed when Click’s CD, “Life Is A Good Place,” was released in April, 2011 and spent more than 12 consecutive months on the Country, pop, and Americana radio charts. The first single, “Wait My Turn”, reached #1 on Nashville’s Indie World Country Chart, and the second single, “I Feel Good Today”, topped out at #14 on the NMW national Country chart along side Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift.

Deeply textured and beautifully written music, layered in tone and color like Autumn, and warming the heart with ambiance, Los Angeles based Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter Phil Celia is here with his latest 8 Track Installment entitled “The PCB Sessions” released in 2015. Usually it takes a couple of listens over a couple of days for me to embrace an album by someone, This album had me in deep with a couple of plays. Let’s be honest though, it’s hard not to be duly impressed by something this ‘life storied” having been created and mostly one person, but on the PCB Sessions I can hear the musical synergy of all players involved – fronted by Celia on guitar and vocals. To say that this music is hard to pin down is a bit of an overstatement. While stylistically there are some very concurrent genres at play (Jim Croce, Edwin McCain, John Hiatt, Cat Stevens, and Paul Simon), Celia delivers a deeper energy that remains non-elusive in his music. The songs dance around the edges of meaning, and hearing the opening intro track “Toe the Line’ is very much like catching fragments of vivid dreams, but upon waking the interpretations remain as the images fade. Bottom line: “The PCB Sessions” gives us some very good songs.

This release has quite a range of sounds. There are some things that remain constant, the saxophone being one of them. Beyond that, though, a few pieces don’t really seem to fit. Also, the lyrics don’t seem to have a lot of depth to them, with a few exceptions. I tend to prefer music with meaning. Still, most of this is very effective in terms of just “feel good” music.

Musical energy and the exchange between audience and a song or band can be such a crucial lifeblood for a composer gathered in the name of fulfilling exhilarating music for music fans. Some of this applies to Loud Alternative Rock based music and Alternative Rock popular in the 90’s. It may not be for everyone in 2016 but no one can deny it has a very dedicated cult following. It’s almost comparable to an intellectual monster unleashed for the sole reason of getting your ass thinking.
