The first single from James Tunnell’s, aka Metal Saint, first album “Choose” provides listeners an excellent introduction to his talents and can be enjoyed by a wide audience regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof. It’s a nuanced piece of metal not entirely reliant on bluster and volume to make an impact on the listener; instead, Tunnell shows a sure hand for manipulating dynamics in such a way it makes a dramatic impression on the listener. It’s the product of a long apprenticeship for Tunnell beginning with his first electric guitar at age thirteen and, as the saying goes, he hasn’t looked back since. It’s a voyage with its own array of influences, some of whom are strongly felt during this performance, and a life’s experiences that have tested his faith without finding it wanting. Tunnell, furthermore, is a bit of a Renaissance man in a world not particularly renowned for such diverse talents. His time as an actor and head of his own production company has enhanced the cinematic aspects of his writing and “Choose” shows off traits certain to get under the skin of its listeners.

Living in the Queensland area of Australia, Omid Master has carried his music off for tourist crowds, in organized live performances, and two studio albums. Three songs from his forthcoming third studio release give us a significant peek and where this talented vocalist and songwriter intends to next take his music. “I’m Going Crazy”, “Only You”, and “When I Close My Eyes” are obviously tailored and aimed towards great commercial success, but they are substantive as well and have important personal statements to make that Master brings off with an utter lack of solipsism or self-indulgence. He’s a songwriter with his eyes on the prize – in this case, expressing the reality of his life and connecting with the widest possible audience. This trio of songs is accessible, stamped with a signature approach and sound like they could have been written and recorded by no one else despite any familiarity they may encourage in the listener.

There is one general musical reference here that might not be overly obvious to everyone. To me though, there are some definite musical links to the Bee Gees on this five-song album. As far as I’m concerned that’s a good thing because I’m an extremely avid Bee Gees fan. Sure, part of that link comes from the falsetto vocals, but there are other comparisons to be made, too. Some of the ways the songs are actually built feels related to the way the Brothers Gibb constructed songs. Just the general vocal lines give off a bit of that vibe, as well. That’s in terms of the melody lines and the delivery, really.

Kama Ruby is originally from Bakersfield, California. She’s been a performer since she was small child. She deftly plies that trade these days as a jazz singer. That’s not her only performing outlet, though. She also performs as an actress and as a dancer. This new two-song single is presented as a part of the publicity push for her new full album.

The new set is her third album. It follows the debut “Kama Ruby, Straight-up & Chilled” and its follow-up “Kama Ruby: Rock Dreams in Jazz.” You might guess from her description as a jazz singer (along with the titles to the albums) that a lot of Ruby’s sound is truly rooted in jazz. That’s a safe bet, and fairly accurate. She brings in a number of other musical styles, though. In other words, this is not pure jazz by my definition, really. Of course, jazz these days is a wide-palette that encompasses a lot of things, so you might disagree with that call depending on your own personal definition. That’s one thing interesting about musical styles. There is a real personal dynamic to where the lines are drawn from one sound to another.

Kazyak is a five-member band that deals in the best of indie rock. Their third album is called Happy Camping, and it consists of six culture-infused tracks that will take listeners back to the woods.

The first thing one notices after sitting down to the band’s latest album is that the songs are vastly the same, yet eerily different. When the album is played track after track, you get a sense of hauntingly pure voices, perfect harmonization, and intriguing instrumentation. Song after song allows a listener delve into melancholy tunes and smooth beats that will make anyone forget that they were thinking about anything. That’s good news for those looking for meditative music.

Paul Kloschinsky’s songwriting talents have earned him considerable attention and acclaim as an independent artist with a strong do it yourself ethic to his recordings. The latest release from this British Columbia based performer and writer, Crime of Passion, sparkles with the same poetry and feeling personifying his earlier collections. Kloschinsky has a distinctive approach to his performances different from many other artists working in this area – there’s a balance between raw intimacy and studied distance here that achieves real effects on the audience. Kloschinsky often sounds like a singer and musician playing for you just at the bleary-eyed edge of morning; dream-like, hazy, but aching with genuine form and meaning. The traditional aspects to the eight songs on Crime of Passion are fluent invocations of the human experience and musically entertaining each time out. Kloschinsky is a polished writer and performer who is clearly improving with age and has yet to reach any sort of downturn in songwriting quality.

This one being Sam Green and the Time Machine, Which Way Left? “Dandeong Ranges” kicks the CD off with a pretty good ditty about the hills near home in Melbourne, AU. This is a slow-moving track, especially in the vocal department. But if you keep an ear to the backing track you’ll clearly hear some well- arranged strings to give you an idea where the music is coming from in a more serious light. The vocals might not be the strong point, and that’s a given across the board. But the lyrics make up for it.

Elle Casazza is a Chicago based singer-songwriter who is adding a fascinating live element into her pop music which includes a mix of popular genres in the 60’s and 70’s. Elle’s eclectic lyrical style has been considerably influenced by classic artists such as Amy Winehouse, No Doubt, Stevie Wonder and Queen. On her album Proof, her voice can also be detected back to Anita Baker and others classic soul and jazz singers. This has some great songs but a lot more to explore than the usual pop parameters suggest. It might even go a step beyond what is needed to succeed in that arena which is often more limited than diverse to the degree it brings. Maybe not to the extent everyone is willing to detect, but if not it’s just as easy to call it smart pop rock and soul, combined with jazz inclinations. And that’s where it can lose classification, but so what. Everything checks out into one within all.
