Lesibu Grand Releases New Single-Video

In punk rock, the attack is everything - and I really do mean everything - that matters when determining the depth and potential of an act, and in the case of the hard-hitting Lesibu Grand, it just might be the greatest attribute she has going for her in the new single “WFS.” A scathing political diatribe that scorches the speakers with its glaring guitar riff soaked in a smart distortion (no L7 rip-offs here), “WFS” is an identity track that lands on record store shelves at just the right time this autumn. With an election over but a familiar apathy starting to sink back into the public consciousness once more, this artist has a lot of work cut out for her this season.

Paul Maged’s New Single “Culture War”

Intentionally gangly and initially feeling like a suffocating - albeit straightforward - element of angst, the riffing that greets us at the start of Paul Maged’s new single “Culture War” is undisputedly the best thing the song has to offer, but in its totality, both the track and its music video are loaded with some of the rarer components you’re going to hear in a contemporary rock release. There’s a brawniness to the performance we get from Maged here that is unique on its own, but when coupled with the melodic wit he brings to the microphone, there’s no mistaking his sound for someone else’s.

The Tennessee Werewolves Releases New Single

Smoky and rich, not unlike the shots of whiskey sitting behind the bar in the new music video for “American Dream,” the vocal we hear in the latest studio work from The Tennessee Werewolves is undisputedly a taste country music being done the right way in 2020. Strikingly cold despite the warm trappings of a solid melodic backdrop created by the band, this voice cuts through everything to define the very mood of the lyrics in “American Dream,” and though I’m a pickier country critic than most, this is exactly what I was hoping to hear out of the indie circuit this November.

“Stars in Their Eyes on SSRIs” from Soup Review

Innocent and almost painfully honest in tone, the vocal harmony produced in the new single and music video “Stars in Their Eyes on SSRIs” from Soup Review doesn’t overshadow the lyrics it conveys, but instead illustrates an emotionality unique unto itself. There aren’t a lot of elements in “Stars in Their Eyes on SSRIs” that you could ever accuse as non-contributive; from the most intricate components of the melodicism to the straightforward approach taken with regard to the poetry here, Soup Review are using every aspect of the track to tell us a story. Theirs is a DIY sound at would could be its most complex, and it definitely has my attention this autumn.

MkX Releases “Fall” Single/Video

2020 has been a year of immense insularity on all fronts, and this is no different in the world of pop music. For indie artists like MkX who have been confined to quarantine whilst still fostering a creative spirit as strong as anything you’ll find in the mainstream - if not just a touch stronger - it hasn’t been the easiest of times, but their angst and internal desire to express is proving to be quite powerful in the slew of new material hitting record store shelves this autumn. MkX’s “Fall” is one of my new favorites, and as its name implies, it seems like a soundtrack made for the present season.

Singer/Songwriter Kate Tucker Releases New Single

Scenes, as a concept we collectively came to understand in the past century, are no more in 2020, and never has this been so obvious as it is when watching a video like that of “A Little Bit of Love” from Kate Tucker, currently out everywhere quality independent music is sold and streamed. In “A Little Bit of Love,” Tucker crosses cultures and aesthetical boundaries to produce something wholeheartedly melodic and transcendently hook-oriented, and from where I sit it’s one of the more buoyant songs of its kind to debut out of the underground in the last couple of months.
