Ranch Hands Release “Figure This Out”
Jack McGuire, Joey Chang, Katherine Kyu, Josh Davidoff and Carl Michnovicz collectively form the band known as Ranch Hands. McGuire, having a background in producing electronic music and contributing to sound design in theater, sought to meld these two realms in their musical endeavor on Figure This Out.
Despite an initial intention for the songs to exude humor, they unexpectedly took on a more melancholic tone. While the comedic element might not be overt, the compositions showcase a depth of songwriting brilliance that invites further exploration. Delving into the intricacies of their work reveals a nuanced and emotive musical landscape that transcends initial expectations.
“Arbor Road” emerges as a delicate, contemplative composition resonating with depth and refinement. Its intricate instrumentation unfolds in layered textures, evoking an ethereal essence. Commencing with a poised guitar motif, the introduction of the violin infuses poignant emotion, elegantly finding its niche within the arrangement. Notably, the cascading piano melodies bear semblance to the evocative tones found in Radiohead’s “True Love Waits.” The vocals, characterized by their pristine clarity and heartfelt delivery, seamlessly intertwine with the musical fabric. Moreover, the lyrics exhibit a thoughtful craftsmanship, embodying a poetic and authentic essence that underscores the track’s originality. Each element harmonizes cohesively, reflecting a meticulous creative process that culminates in a composition rich with introspection and artistic sincerity.

“Dogdogdogdogdog” elicited an emotional response that moved me to tears, striking a deep chord due to my recent loss of a beloved pet. The song’s thematic exploration of the profound bond between humans and dogs resonated with me. Musically, it exudes sincerity and an almost intimate ambiance, while also carrying a subtle playfulness. Its ability to evoke a spectrum of emotions—from heartfelt sincerity to a playful spirit—was deeply affecting. Undoubtedly, for anyone who shares a bond with a dog, this composition possesses the potential to elicit a profound emotional resonance across multiple levels, tapping into the intricacies of this cherished relationship.
The vocals across this EP stirred a sense of familiarity, but it wasn’t until “Sour Candy” that the resemblance became clear. Fans acquainted with Pavement might discern shades of Stephen Malkmus in the vocal delivery. This track, in particular, resonates with beauty, exuding an alt-country essence heightened by outstanding performances across the board. Its full arrangement encapsulates a captivating blend of influences and musical prowess, further cementing its allure. For enthusiasts attuned to Pavement’s sound, this piece offers a melodic homage while carving its own distinct identity.
The concluding track, “Big House,” served as an impeccable finale for the EP, resonating with an uplifting and nearly cathartic mood. McGuire’s vocals carry a sense of resolve, notably referencing the phrase “Figure This Out,” which harmoniously aligns with the EP’s title. This culmination ties together the thematic elements of introspection and determination, crafting a cohesive narrative that resonates with the album’s overarching message.
The songwriting and production with this EP is on point. For an EP that was supposed to be funny I found it to be unexpectedly powerful and relatable. I have a feeling most who listen will feel the same way I do.
