Percussive Acoustic Alternative Rhythms Echoing Daniel Johnston : Outsider and Grunge Folk Artist Andrew Neil Unveils New Album
Encompassing listeners with a warm, soft, mellow, and loving echo, budding Outsider artist and songwriter AndrewNeil is driven to win hearts with his new album “Sunny Side”, drawing a parallel to the work of the Great outsider songwriter Daniel Johnston.
Charlottesville, Virginia – June 18th, 2021 – Up-and-coming singer and songwriter Andrew Neil is becoming a stirring force in the world of Alternative and Outsider Folk. Penning over 400 songs since surviving a major car accident in 2009, Andrew Neil is an independent outsider music icon. The emerging singer songwriter taught himself how to play the keyboard and guitar by writing songs and used music to channel his intimate emotions.
With the recent June 15th digital release of his new album “Sunny Side”, Andrew Neil puts on a show with his vintage nylon string Ovation Guitar underscored by a unique and driving precussive style guitar rhythm and keyboard overdubs. Imbuing a very natural and organic spirit, the budding singer is set to warm hearts and bring back a memorable and uplifting vibe to music. It feels as though the artist is in your living room playing live. Neil’s unique, almost grunge-like guitar style, is a bit reminisent of Nirvana’s unplugged concert in New York in November 1994.
Kathy McCarty, founding member and co-leader of the band Glass Eye (1983-1993) and close friend and colleague of the great songwriter and outsider artist Daniel Johnston reviewed the album and wrote a brief liner note which will appear on the CD and Vinyl Album cover. This is what she said about Andrew Neil’s “Sunny Side” Album:
“Andrew Neil’s SUNNY SIDE is a revelation. The outpouring of melody and counterpoint is deeply affecting, seeming to come directly from a heart so genuine that it is almost too pure for this world. His simple, direct lyrics can seem almost too plain; but then you find them reverberating in your mind for days afterward. This is a songwriter who will find his audience, as Daniel Johnston did.” Kathy McCarty
The new record is an amalgam of sounds that are refreshing, crisp and warm. Every track on the album is catchy and underlined by a positive message. Tracks such as “Gamblin Man” and “Heaven”, evoke a soft and catchy vibe, which heralds towards the wistful and soulful essence of time, along with the titular track “Sunny Side” which is evocative of an optimistic vibe and outlook. Andrew Neil’s new solo release will follow up on two fully instrumented studio albums, titled ‘Merry Go Round’ and ‘Freak’, which were produced by Andy Waldeck and released in 2018 and 2019 respectively.
“I believe the album will appeal to people who really dig the lo-fi, outsider vibe. I hope my music will be recognized as something genuine; something that people can relate to and let them know they are not alone in this jello world” says the artist regarding his new release.
In Addition to the recent digital release, “Sunny Side” will also be available on CD in July 2021, along with a limited press Vinyl version being accessible later in October. Only 100 – 150 copies of the vinyl will be pressed. “Sunny Side” is the first in a series of lo-fi Albums the artist plans on releasing in the new two years.
The stunning Album Cover art was painted by rising Bostonian Artist, Daniel Ben-ayun, who was featured in Juxtapose Magazine and has been compared to the famed pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.
Andrew Neil is listed on Rankers Best Outsider Music Artists and The Best Lo-fi Bands/Artists lists along with great music icons such as Daniel Johnston, Ween, Pavement, Elliot Smith, Syd Barrett, Frank Zappa, Skip Spence, Neutral Milk Hotel and many others.

Andrew Neil is a growing poet, songwriter, recording artist, and painter. In 2009, Neil sustained a head injury in a car accident which forever changed his life and put him on his unique musical voyage. He began to write songs out of nowhere. Struggling with Bipolar 1 Disorder and Schizoaffective Disorder, Andrew began writing about his struggles with mental illness in his soulful tunes.
In 2014, the outsider and Alternative music artist was hospitalized due to escalation of a psychotic episode, and subsequently wrote and recorded over seventy original tracks while a patient. Soon after his release from the Hospital in May 2017, he released the album ‘Code Purple-Andrew Neil,’ – composed and recorded while in recovery at the hospital (a one-of-its-kind feat!).
In 2019, Andrew was diagnosed with an aggressive Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Cancer. Despite having gone through taxing chemotherapy treatment and bearing the brunt of illnesses, Andrew Neil finished recording the album ‘Freak’ and released it. He is currently looking forward to the release of a series of albums, beginning with the just released “Sunny Side”. He is already working on his next release which will be titled “Alien” (release date TBD).
