Decades-Old Sunset Sound Recordings Offer Timely Social Commentary and Personal Reflections

Salt Lake City, UT – More than four decades after its creation, The Logic of Lunacy, a powerful progressive rock album penned and produced by veteran music industry figure Pat Melfi under the moniker The Marquee Ghosts, is set for a global release on April 6. Recorded in 1982 at the iconic Sunset Sound studios in Los Angeles, this rediscovered gem captures a period of intense creative ambition, finally surfacing to offer a potent blend of social consciousness and heartfelt spirituality.

While Melfi is widely celebrated for his impactful behind-the-scenes career – including executive roles at MCA Records, numerous Promoter of the Year accolades, and management of artists like Grammy winner Rebecca Lynn Howard and Juice Newton – his early 1980s progressive rock project remained a closely guarded secret. Inspired by the era’s sonic experimentation and the turbulent sociopolitical landscape, Melfi envisioned a collection of songs that merged symphonic rock production with poetic lyricism and incisive commentary. Working with a group of accomplished musicians, he brought fourteen expansive tracks to life, featuring soaring vocals, cinematic arrangements, and emotionally charged songwriting.

Circumstances, however, prevented the album’s initial release. Contractual obligations stemming from Melfi’s burgeoning industry career meant that The Logic of Lunacy became a hidden musical time capsule for decades. Now, its emergence feels remarkably prescient, with themes of questioning authority, confronting social upheaval, and exploring spiritual struggles resonating deeply with contemporary audiences.

The recordings showcase Melfi’s skills on piano, keyboards, and arrangements, complemented by the guitar work of Slim Harpo and Pete Currenti, the drumming of Elliot Piazza, and the compelling lead vocals of Martin Christopher. The album navigates from grand progressive rock statements to intimate personal confessions, highlighted by the haunting ballad “Children of the Static,” the politically charged title track, and the introspective spiritual centerpiece “Lord Can It Be.” The band adopted the name The Marquee Ghosts, Melfi explains, “because we knew at the time that the music might never be released because of contractual conflicts. In a way, we felt like ghosts—artists whose music would never appear on the marquee.”

With the unveiling of The Logic of Lunacy, those artistic specters finally step into the spotlight. This long-lost project stands as a testament to ambitious songwriting, fearless lyrical exploration, and large-scale rock production. Discover the early songwriting voice of Pat Melfi and experience music that, despite its lengthy silence, has found its powerful moment.
