“Are You Lonesome Tonight” Single/Video from Des Cox

Humor can be as profound a healer as music is, and when the two are intertwined in a single track, pure magic can ensue. This is definitely the case with the new single “Are You Lonesome Tonight” from Des Cox, which sees Cox adapting the Elvis Presley classic into a fun, contemporary and humorous listen perfect for those still hungover from 2020. Rather than trying to change or merely replicate the foundations of the original “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” Cox steers clear of anything predictable and instead strips away any frills to reveal as crisp and clean a product as possible. In my opinion, it’s some of his best work yet.

First off, as this is a single recorded before a live crowd of concertgoers, the chemistry between artist and audience plays a major role in how we interpret the track. That said, connecting with the people he’s playing for is never an issue for Cox in this performance; the sparks between them are off the charts from the get-go, with the response he gets from the in person listeners fueling much of the tone he applies to every verse he sings. It’s smooth and seamless, as one would expect out of a veteran player.

All jokes and cosmetics aside, Des Cox’s lead vocal is spot-on perfect for the melody created by the strings, and I think it’s obvious from every angle just how much passion he has for this material. Elvis is definitely one of the most influential players in the history of popular music, and here we get a look at one of his more recognizable hits through the lens of someone who is much more than a fan or even an artist inspired by his work. He’s an individual, and it’s ironic just how much of this fact is being conveyed in a cover song.

Overall, the production quality here is really awesome, especially considering this was recorded at a small live gig (before COVID-19 ravaged the concert circuit in 2020, mind you). There’s nothing synthesized in the harmony, leaving everything preserved and as organic as it was when Cox performed it for the audience. One of the worst things any artist can do is put plasticized sonic barriers between themselves and the listeners for any reason – be it aesthetical or commercial in nature alike – and it’s something I can’t imagine this player ever engaging in.

If you’re in need of a smile or just a simple melodic pick-me-up this February, you really can’t go wrong with Des Cox’s “Are You Lonesome Tonight.” I have a feeling this song is going to bring a lot more attention to his discography in general, and as it’s growing regularly and only getting sharper with time, I don’t have any doubts as to whether or not we’re going to hear some more original content from him in the near future. This is a great exhibition piece, and undeniably leaves me wanting more of his own material sooner than later.
