Can Innocence Make Big Noise?
Some say that there’s an aura of innocence and pride that comes with being in charge of one’s own musical career. And it seems to be borne our more and more in the early years of the 21st century.
Keeping innocent and “indie” seems to be a matter of true faith and commitment these days. But can it yield the kind of exposure a band wants and needs? Evidently, it can.
True example? San Diego’s INNOCENT NOISE…and their rise to success.
Unlike so many SoCal bands that seem to fall into the “Baskin-Robbins Flavor of the Month” mold of what works for the Majors, INNOCENT NOISE have followed their hearts and their music by adamantly maintaining their independence. And succeeding!
Succeeding? Yeah…if you call serious gigging and nationwide exposure a measure of success. They’ve played notable gigs like The So Cal. Indie Artist Showcase [7-29-06], House of Blues’ [Sunset Strip] Halloween Party in 2005, and the 2006 InkSlingers Ball at Anaheim Stadium (past performers have included: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Glen Danzig, Ziggy Marley, House of Pain, Motley Crue, Social Distortion, The Cult, Guns N’ Roses and Alice In Chains and more. Not bad company!)
They threw their own Rock & Roll Fashion Show [Friday 2-10-06] just before Valentine’s, in the epicentre of Hollywood, with some serious sponsors including Bad Kitty Ent., One Night Ent., BW Management; Affliction, Urban Sprawl, Skinnie Ent. Mag., Music Connection, and Wave Magazines; KamaSutra.com, Friendster.com, Jagermeister, MusicPlusTV.com [filming for rebroadcast], and many more. Pretty broad spectrum, and definitely showing some serious indie respect for INNOCENT NOISE.
INNOCENT NOISE were selected as one of 2 true Indies (not with William Morris, CAA, etc…or an indie label) to showcase on one of the two main stages at the national convention for NACA (National Association of Campus Activities) in Boston, MA in Feb ’06. Heck…they even played before thousands of people at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego for the National Paintball League World Series. How cool…and how indie..is that?
OK, OK…That’s fine for live performance, but the point is they’re grabbing the attention of fans across North America in other ways , too. I.N. were selected as “Feature Interview” on “PunkTV.ca”…Canada’s leading publisher of punk, metal and alt interviews, features and reviews. That’s a site with roughly 1.6 Million Hits and 110,000 users per month! They were tapped for a write up in BangBang Magazine…a free French-language cultural mag. distributed all across the province of Quebec, Canada.
Lifestyle zine No Cover Magazine snagged NOISE’s “Threading the Needle” for their “Groupies Suck Vol. 9” compilations CD, distributed at all Barnes and Nobles around the U.S. with the mag. Nice work!
Innocent Noise have performed at almost every major club in So. Cal. HOB -LA & SD, Viper Room, The Highlands Hollywood, Key Club, Angel Stadium, Qualcomm Stadium, The Belly Up, Canes and many more. I.N. have also Rocked Jillian’s in Las Vegas twice, and the Stratosphere Hotel. In Santa Barbara they’ve been rocking UCSB parties for 2+ years all over Isla Vista, and has played The James Joyce in downtown Santa Barbara. They’ve also toured the northeast twice including a national NACA showcase, and Maine Maritime Academy, and University of Maine.
Radio? Yup! TOP 5 ADDs [CMJ] around the country, in some cases ahead of major bands, as well as charting on stations as varied as the #1’s they scored at: WNSU 88.5 FM – FT. LAUDERDALE, FL, “RADIO 200 ADDS,” WASU 90.5 FM – BOONE, NC, and KURA 98.9 FM – OURAY, CO.
Innocent Noise’s “Xotica” EP received FM spins in cities like Los Angeles, Portland [OR and ME], Chicago, Boston, Houston, New York, Milwaukee, Ft Lauderdale; as well as many cities and towns in between. Global spins included five I.N. songs being selected for the syndicated “On The Horizon” radio show on 104.7 FM in Los Angeles, some serious web casts, and 113 radio stations in Australia, via Ison Live Radio, and on 100.7 FM in Puerto Rico.
Global? Yeah. Innocent? Yup…and making a pretty BIG freakin’ NOISE!
