Long Beach, California – August 8, 2019 – With a glam rock aesthetic that has been MIA in the mainstream since the days of Bowie, CARSON is looking to bring that and then some back into pop music with his synth-filled new single and video, “Once Again.”

“Once Again” both the song and the video, inspire a range of things; from movement to movements. The synth-pop sounds pulsate throughout as CARSON delivers the lyrics with finesse while the video showcases a myriad of LGBTQ faces.

Up and comer Allocai drops a dreamy debut in his powerful new single, “Cloud9,” a track that gives us a pretty good grasp of his multidimensional personality without overindulging in repetitive themes. Throughout the whole of the track, Allocai makes a point to fuse as many textures and richly diverse tones into a singular tour de force of a harmony that vaults between R&B territory in one stanza only to evolve into a rock n’ roll power ballad in the next. As experimental as this piece is, it’s far from inaccessible; quite frankly, I found “Cloud9” to be one of the most intriguingly smart pop songs out this season.

Casualties, the third official album from The Merrymaker’s Orchestrina, erupts out of the darkness with the aptly-titled “Anarchy (Reloaded),” which sets the stage for all of the rebellious experimentation soon to follow it in the mightily melodic “Have Mercy on Me.” These two tracks are definitely as broadminded as a pair of record-openers can be, the first acting as a sonic juggernaut intent on pushing maximum energy out of the speakers while the second serves to let the dust settle amidst a gorgeous guitar’s humble melody. The Merrymaker’s Orchestrina mean to remind us all why they’re one of the most respected groups in their scene these days in Casualties, and from where I sit, they did a heck of a good job.

There’s a near psychedelic feel to Davie Simmons’ latest single “Halcyon Days”, but it is far closer to art pop than spacey singer/songwriter fare. The arrangement swells around his clear and slightly stentorian delivery, but he has undeniable emotive powers and the writing, in particular the lyrics, is top notch throughout.  Guitar laces through the mid-tempo gait of the song without ever overshadowing Simmons’ delivery and has a signature sound quite unlike anything else in modern music. There are no instrumental breaks, per se, but the obvious skill and well placed musical turns help make this a compelling number. The song’s duration of a hair under three minutes is revelatory – it is impressive how Simmons manages to create an entire musical world within a condensed framework and encourages listeners to come back for additional listens.
