After singing a Pop/Reggae fusion band, NewDayz, for about a year in 2016, one of Montreal’s best kept secrets, Lauria, released her fist single “Losing Me” to music fans around the world. Florie-Laure “Lauria” Zadigue Dubé is a unique singer/songwriter with a voice of gold that doesn’t quit on this marvelous track with just the right touches of style and class to win over Pop, Rock and Soul lovers. She comes with a musical background that started with watching local Montreal artists record in his basement studio, and she eventually started singing in the same band with her cousin.

A bit of fuzz and feedback. It’s almost like we’re changing stations on the radio, cruising down a busy downtown boulevard. Mike Ra’s sending out a dedication to the great white north’s Queen City. There’s a certain anticipation that the breaking white noise of the introduction to “Dog$” provides us that you could almost cut with a knife if it lasted long enough to find one. And then, that bass kicks in. We’re moving. It’s still the same boulevard, but the speed is maximized. None of that matters because we’re in the cabin with Mike, and he’s describing the circumstances of his life and friends to us like we’re stationary in this moment. How we’re existing in such feverish motion is a mystery to us, but again, there isn’t enough time to decipher our current situation. We’re still moving faster than we can think, and it doesn’t look like we’re going to be slowing down anytime soon.

It’s hard just to get through the week anymore without hearing a somber story of loss or rage-inducing news of injustice. Patiently Awaiting the Meteorite’s debut single and video is for the grooving, 70s layered masterpiece “Electrified,” from their forthcoming first full albums, Canyon Diablo. The group comprised of an ongoing sonic collaboration of Dee and The Grand Brothers. Combining organic, powerful bass lines, thumping drums, walls of keyboards and surging melodic vocals melded to folky chanting, there’s a constant immediacy to the music on offer here but the more you play the song, the more carefully placed textures and unusual sonic elements radiate from the mix. Influences of classic psychedelic rock, modern upbeat folk, new wave and even a disco like shuffle permeate the many variations heard in this tune.

There are some who will find Kevin Durr’s songwriting a bit tedious with its upbeat point of view, but those are more than likely those with preconceived notions about singer/songwriters always maintaining some dire, self-centered aura of despair, forever wracked by love, or mending broken hearts. Kevin Durr’s artistic vision, however, is much wider than that and his musical talents back it up quite nicely. His songwriting has always incorporated both acoustic and more pop-oriented textures – the trend continues with his new album Better Angels and he sounds more confident than ever with pouring old wine into new bottles and delivering songs that say something meaningful about modern human experience without ever laying it on too thick for listeners. It’s a treat to hear a singer/songwriter who is so individual rather than yet another talented parrot mimicking their musical heroes. He’s taken lessons learned him his musical influences and his own observational skills into something uniquely his own.
