Nick Dakota – Vision

The first release from Michigan born Nick Dakota, Vision, contains a dozen songs from some of the best songwriters working in the genre today. Modern country gets its knocks from purists because its forsaken the traditional and now decidedly un-commercial sound of bygone days, but many of Dakota’s songs are firmly rooted in the classic country sound while even the rockier numbers never desert the country sound entirely. His vocals show remarkable dexterity. Dakota’s debut shows that he’s just as much at home with ballads as he is kick out the footlights countrified rockers and his voice can shift from bellowing to nuance without any apparent effort. Vision is full of life, good times, and experiences that any listener will relate to.

D Clak - Trap Again

His performing moniker refers to his first name, Derrick, and an approximation of one of the noises a pistol makes before you pull the trigger. It’s an apropos reference. D Clak, a longtime Pittsburgh resident, fires off his lyrics with a measured cadence that varies wildly in both tempo and tone. There’s nothing that this guy can’t do verbally. He twists the words as he sees fit, condensing them, making them elastic, but most of all Clak works hard to present an unified approach. The single “Trap Again” from his debut full length album The Dime Piece shows off a talent for matching his voice as closely as possible with a musical arrangement that doesn’t merely serve as a glorified vehicle for his vocals. The production is immaculately handled. Everything, vocals and otherwise, are invested with a warm aura and post-production effects have been seamlessly worked into the song without any showing any stitching.

Andriana Lehr – Artifacts

The sophomore album from singer/songwriter Andriana Lehr represents the full flowering of talent evident on her debut, 2013’s Try to Be True. The new album Artifacts spends a lot of time trying to strike the right musical mood, invariably succeeding, but there’s far more to this ten song collection than theatricality and style. Lehr’s choices show her to be a genuine artist of growing powers who fearlessly incorporates a wide variety of sounds and instruments into her work. There are few artists with the audacity to marry dobro with classical instruments, but not only does Lehr do this, but she has the ample talent to pull it off. Much of this, to be sure, is the result of surrounding herself with a cadre of top flight musicians who can aid her in realizing this musical vision and production support that is top class down the line.

Chris Murphy - The Tinker’s Dream

Chris Murphy has complied a musical CV that’s glorious to behold. He’s played alongside marquee musicians and genre darlings alike while pursuing his own artistic vision on a growing discography of solo recordings that respect no genre boundaries and show fearlessness with few parallels on the modern music scene. His latest full length studio recording entitled The Tinker’s Dream doesn’t confine itself to Americana music but, instead, shows a wide ranging command over a variety of styles. It is the third release since May of 2016 and probably the most European flavored of these songs. There are few more instrumentals featured on this release than the previous two releases, but Murphy’s instrumentals are quite unlike anything else you’ve heard in this vein. His freewheeling soloing and melodic gifts are consistently focused throughout each of the album’s songs and he receives superb support from a stellar cast of musical cohorts.
