Jonathan Cavier - Comes a Moment

“Comes a Moment” is the first track on Jonathan Cavier’s debut album Premier and its newest single. Cavier couldn’t have chosen a better track to open up his solo effort and its release as a single makes great sense. The superior production marking the collection is well illustrated here and the lyrical content makes for a great introduction to Cavier’s art for any remaining novice listeners. It demonstrates the same focus that characterized the album’s first single, “January”, while adopting a different sound and exhibiting a little bit of a different emotional mood. The release of this new single is wisely accompanied by a video as well, but Cavier’s music is so rich with imaginative possibilities that it provides listeners with a cinematic experience all its own sans visuals. This will likely build even more momentum for Cavier and, surely, elicit more critical and commercial notice. Jonathan Cavier is an artist who deserves heard and “Comes a Moment” is a perfect illustration why. 

Richard Scott - Keeper of My Heart

“Keeper of My Heart”, the latest single release from respected vocalist and songwriter Richard Scott, finds this artist working near or at the height of his powers. Scott, a fixture on live stages across the country since the late 70’s, briefly left the music world in the early 21st century due to family concerns, but his recent return to activity finds his talents untouched by the passage of time. He brings together superior vocal abilities, melody, and a strong invocation of traditional country music that still sounds distinctly modern and accessible. There’s a lot you’re going to recognize about this song, it does work within long established formulas, but there’s also more than the spark of something signature in the way he approaches the familiar that will engage audiences both on the recording and in live performance.  

John Wesley Coleman III - Microwave Dreams

The new ten song collection from Texas singer/songwriter and published poet John Wesley Coleman III further strengthens his reputation as one of the true songwriting independents working today. Microwave Dreams shows his dexterity as it delves through a variety of styles without losing its coherence or artistic footing. His vocals, however outside the mainstream they might sound on first or hundredth listen, are perfect for his lyrics about personal desperation, joy, getting through a day, desire, and dozens of other subject clearly preoccupying him. There’s some unexpected instruments thrown into the mix along the way, some odd musical touches that could come from no one else, but he never sounds out of place even in the most nominally unusual settings. The production varies some and seems tailored to the needs of each song.

Dave Vargo - Burning Through

If you like roots rock songwriters or intelligent AOR fare from the late eighties, early nineties, Dave Vargo will likely be a good score for you. His debut Burning Through is a spectacularly well conceived collection for this New Jersey native and longtime in-demand session guitarist. While he proves to be every bit as much of a talented songwriter as he is a performing musician, Vargo likewise exhibits a profoundly sharp instinct for picking the right collaborators. The five star musicians accompanying him on Burning Through help him harness a variety of sounds and approaches to record quite a formidable first album. Burning Through certainly has a strong commercial edge, as mentioned earlier, but Vargo never aims for the mainstream shorn of artistic credibility. Instead, Burning Through stands as an impassioned statement from a performer who is ready to be heard after a long time.

Downie Streahl - Run Away With You

“Run Away with You”, the latest single from Michigan born vocalist and songwriter Downie Streahl, gives lie to the idea that pop country is incapable of making substantive musical statements. Her artistry in a number of different musical form, including jazz, means Streahl possesses the technique to inhabit any style and invest it with the same emotional credibility she brings to anything she does. Despite appearances in notoriously plastic places like Las Vegas, there’s nothing plastic about anything Streahl touches and the awards and critical plaudits she’s accumulated from every quarter testify to her enduring value as a performer. This new single will burnish her blossoming reputation and, as an early taste of her forthcoming fourth full length album, “Run Away with You” promises even greater heights remain to be scaled. This is a performer who can transform any material into musical art.

Brent Daniels - Every Road Has a Turn

Brent Daniels is different breed of singer from the crop of modern country performers who’ve emerged in recent years. He has a modern touch, but the breadth of his singing voice is capable of existing in the present while still recalling the work of much older artists. It helps keep his more traditional efforts tethered to a timelessness that more limited contemporaries lack. His first album Every Road Has a Turn comes at its intended audience from a number of directions while keeping a natural, commercially minded sound going for the entirety of the release. Daniels is a vocal talent who’s capable of shedding his technique and letting it rip, but he’s also got the ability to move our minds with the thoughtful way he handles Every Road Has a Turn’s more thoughtful numbers.
