There’s a sly, smirking quality to “kiss off” songs that helps them abide far longer than their love song counterparts. Nothing inspires a songwriter’s creative ire much more than being jettisoned in favor of another and there’s genuine artistry in those songs able to convey that ire without oozing bitterness and resentment. Italian born Alessandro Coli knows this well. His latest single “I Betcha” is full of personality, stylish drama, and physical musicality that seduce the listeners with insistent tempos rather than sonically outmuscling its audience. Coli’s journey into the American music scene began with his first US release earlier this year, “Flames”, which achieved significant chart success, and this new single should set him poised to assume even greater exposure in the world’s largest music market. His skills are growing exponentially with each new outing. 

Phantom Phunk - Arboles Ossific

The debut album from Phantom Phunk, Arboles Ossific, is an energetic and wildly arranged musical journey. These four musicians from the Tampa, Florida area first formed in 2014 around the core of Sasha Cheine and Hector Alexander, two longtime friends and songwriters with creative vision to burn. They soon teamed with Juan Gonzalez and drummer Nick Emiliozzi on drums to form the current incarnation then locked themselves into working up and refining the material heard on this first album. It is an incredible ten song collection that rarely misses the mark and, instead, achieves much thanks to its confluence of artistic daring, a refusal to play by conventional rules, and their wide ranging skill set. The production, handled by the band themselves, gives the music an excellent forum to get over with listeners and it succeeds at nearly every turn.  

Bunny Sigler - White Christmas

When You’re In Love At Christmas Time, the forthcoming album from R&B and soul music legend Bunny Sigler, is poised to end up one of the finest examples of this once a year genre released in recent memory. The opening single from the album is Sigler’s stunning reimagining of “White Christmas”. He doesn’t completely turn the song inside out, but this longstanding classic gets spun in a different direction thanks to Sigler’s desire to surround it with his signature sound and the defining elements of his musical style. This isn’t paint by numbers Yuletide cheer with a low bar to clear for pleasing the listening public. Instead, Sigler tackles this song with the same passion that he brings to his own originals and expends tremendous effort into making this as full of a hearing experience as possible. It has gravitas and light, it has soul and tremendous melody. Even for people who normally pan the Christmas time music genre as too cheesy to take seriously, Bunny Sigler’s take on “White Christmas” will rank high.

Project-TO is an Italian based three piece collective with multimedia ambitions whose debut album, The White Side The Black Side, sets a new bar for conceptual releases. The twelve song album is divided into two groups of six songs – the white and black side respectively. The white side embraces the customary big beat sound of electronica while their counterparts on the black side – the same length as the white versions – provide what the trio terms “photo negatives” of their white versions. The black side, as the color infers, delves into rougher and much more stripped down textures than the first group and zips along with a sort of low-hung intensity that relies more on an accumulation of effects rather than overwhelming the listener. The intended similarities between the corresponding songs are manifest, but they are equally distinguishable from one another and stand on their own as separate compositions.  

Saint Blasphemer - Simon Templar

The first original material from Southern California based band Saint Blasphemer is challenging both lyrically and musically. Writer Thomas Monroe has some local renown as a talented poet and his lyrics are driven by memorable imagery and a convincing voice without ever sacrificing accessibility. His broad based depiction of the ravages drug addiction has inflicted on his area and network of friends is vividly rendered and accompanied by a high octane musical attack and arrangements that are to the point, but never bereft of subtleties. The band’s creative vision is quite firm. None of these songs waste the listener’s time with unsuccessful self-indulgence and instead maintains locked down aim on providing listeners with an intense listening experience that has no small amount of theatricality.  

Sterling Witt - Satyagraha

The excitement provided by truly transformative music sometimes wanes with experience. Ecclesiastes said there’s nothing new under the sun and, to a certain extent, this dour Biblical cynicism rings true. It’s difficult to imagine how many guitar-driven four piece bands have written songs about cars, girls, summer, and having a good time and, after a few decades of hearing those innumerable variants, it’s easy to look askance on yet one more rock song railing against The Man, lusting after some woman, or living fast and dying young. If you are a true music obsessive, however, those moments never disappear entirely. If you search out new music, keep your mind open, and believe, the moment comes again. Hearing Sterling Witt’s music for the first time reminded me about that fluttering in my limbs, the lightness in my stomach, and the mental rush inspired music is capable of producing in me. His thirteen song fifth album Satyagraha crackles with the fire of real inspiration and the guitar, in particular, is super charged with the real spirit of rock and roll coupled with literate and thought-provoking lyrics.

Angie and the Deserters – You

Her voice, likewise, sets her apart for its unique blend of the nasal and the sweet, the raw emotion, wide range, and ample technique that seems so effortless for her to bring together. The latest release, You, is a six song EP that covers a surprisingly large range of textures while still touching on the usual themes and narratives in a distinctly personal fashion. Bruyere, as well, possesses a great talent for turning familiar lyrical moments into surprises with her literary turns of phrase and the sometimes subtle and delicious subversion of convention.
