Rock music doesn’t have a lot of commercially viable modes going forward from here. Heavy metal is played out, except a smattering of nu-metal and pastiche bands like Orange Goblin or Steel Panther. Roots rock is the providence of legacy acts like Springsteen and others of his ilk or else playing to sedate, but adoring, crowds in an assortment of City Wineries. The cock rock acts of yesteryear like Zeppelin or the eighties hair metal bands could never survive in our modern societal climate. However, the airy angst rock of Coldplay and Mumford and Sons still carries enough commercial clout to delude otherwise intelligent young men into forming rock bands. Thank god for their folly. Call Security is a five piece from upstate New York who’ve adopted many of the poses of bands like the aforementioned units. It’s garnered them a win in a regional talent content and the resulting free studio time gave them the chance to assemble their first recording, To Whom It May Concern.

Singer-songwriter, Elliot Schneider has been on the music for a lot more years, compared to any of his contemporaries. His latest album ‘Better a Foor Than Aloof,’ which has 12 tracks is probably the culmination of all the work that he has done over the years.

His first album, ‘Surreal Survivor,’ which released in 1986, was a huge hit with the audience as it went on to become the No.1 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases mp3 chart in Rock/Oldies & Retro.

Ian C. Bouras – Pieces of the Past

Ian C. Bouras is an interesting artist based out of New York who just released his latest 7 Track CD entitled “Pieces of the Past” under Synth City Records. His sound is a hybrid of contemporary classic Chill with today’s popular avant-garde Classic Electronica instrumentation and overtones.

He delivers a psychotic at time melodramatic Chill style of neo-progressive New Age Electronica via wide range of influences. When listening to this CD it reminded me of my influences: Aly & Fila, Markus Schulz, Protoculture and The Blizzard. The songwriting aims to promote all of the above not holding back at all. Too many composers are holding back to much thus reducing their songs to sanitized versions of themselves. My advice – just be yourself and sdtop trying to make everyone happy. The first track “Everything You’ve Ever Always Wanted” delivers a well-appointed first movement.  Also present are tight rhymes and beats, sonic horns and Bouras’s Guitar in the fore front. In my opinion this project features 2 main instruments players – rhythm section and guitar. To me these 2 personify the core Bouras sound. Again the two primaries - finely balanced within the mix. The melodies especially appealing higher register, is artfully defined while still layered quite nicely within the grooves. He has much to offer insofar as passion, melody and depth without falling into the guitarist-with-supporting-arrangement trap. With highlight tracks like the first 3 “Everything You’ve Always Wanted”, “In Mysterious Ways”, and “The Inevitability of Loss” one can’t help but admire how just 2 primary instruments are distributed masterfully within this short but sweet 7 Track CD. Sure there are other instruments present but I am talking about the musical core. This is a true to form old Chill that successfully captures the vintage songwriting finesse of Bouras. Some would say all this music sounds the same – I would disagree.

There’s good reason to be leery of releases from music talent show winners. The big two of the last twenty years in that genre, American Idol and America’s Got Talent, have catapulted a handful of substantive performers into the limelight. However, most are rightly regarded as essentially facile talents who fell into obscurity soon after the bloom faded off their contest win. Michael Grimm, five years removed from his Season Five win on America’s Got Talent, has proven his staying power isn’t the result of promotional skill, but real talent. The Colorado native doesn’t lack for material on his latest effort – Grimm presents twelve impeccably produced tracks designed to maximize mainstream appeal.

The one hit wonder idea gets a bad rap.  I’m not saying that fresh new pop artist Vince Lindley is going to end up one, but even if he does…is that really a bad place to be?  Many singers and musicians never even manage to break the charts during lengthy careers, so even managing such a feat once is a much more respectable accomplishment than it is given credit for.
