Win Big with Shannyn Casino

Shannyn Casino has a sound that’s stylish and sexy all at the same time. “Soldier Love” is for fans of Usher, most definitely. It has this R&B pop flare that will make you move and groove all at once. His vocals are on point, but the tempo allows for it to be a dance track as well. S-Dub helps out on “Rewind.” In this one the start has this elegant start that’s met with a mystery in the vocals. Then he comes through with that smooth delivery. One listen to “Christina” and many will want that to be their moniker. The romance and seduction in this one will make anyone weak in the knees. The same can and will be said about “Luv U Like Me.” From top to bottom, side to side - Shannyn Casino is an artist who knows how to get the job done the first time around. He would be smart to try out for one of those singing competitions and give his touch to the likes of some Ne-Yo. If you’re a fan of modern R&B, check out Shannyn Casino today. Jill On Keys: Piano & Beats

Jill On Keys’ “Piano & Beats” album takes the elegance of the piano and tosses in some modern ways. It opens up with “So Inspired” and it sounds like a track that would welcome you to a classy affair at a party downtown in a metropolitan area. The lights are dimmed, the wine is flowing and the conversations are nothing but secure. “Flavor of Favor” is where that modern feel comes into play. That back beat really sticks out and makes it so you would and could hear a track like this backing a song made by the likes of Common. It has a Neo-Soul vibe. In “No Time for Time” the same can be said, it has this sass to it. As the record winds down, “Abandoned Dreams” does the trick. All the tracks have this calming effect, but this one especially. It just allows the listener to lose themselves in the music. Last up and capping off the album is the fittingly titled, “End to Begin.” This one sounds like where we started. It has that elegant aspect and rounds out the record nicely. If you’re a fan of piano music but with a modern twist, check out Jill On Keys’ “Piano & Beats,” out now. (https://www.jillonkeys.com/)

There’s nothing as uniquely frustrating as an almost-great album. You can take pleasure from the numerous good points, but certain types of serious listeners will hear how largely satisfying songs could be resounding statements with an improved mix, a better bass line, or increased variety. Colorway’s The Black Sky Sequined is an easy album to like. This Northeastern-based power trio doesn’t limit themselves to a few set poses and drown in a sea of rock clichés. They have genuine creative vision and aren’t afraid to take risks. Unfortunately, however, the album has moments when they veer off course and otherwise promising material loses its luster.

Guaranteed Win with Michael Spaulding

Michael Spaulding is a mixture of “American Idol” royalty and a ‘90s rock giant. He hit the nail on the head because before you even see that Michael notes himself that he’s like a cross between Daughtry and Stained, that’s what you get right off the bat with “Guaranteed Disaster.” It has this pop crossover appeal, but still straddles that rock and roll line. In “Nelo” the rock comes to the forefront and really gives this track a kick at the start. Even the vocals have a grittier feel to them. With that, things calm in “Letter.” You could hear this one taking over on Vh1. The intro to “She’s Like the Wind” has epic written all over it, but then that sentiment settles down and a more so-so verse comes but is then met up with a heavier chorus. Last up, “Tell Me” gives us a heartfelt delivery through and through. If you’re a fan of what Daughtry brings to the table but also love Aaron Lewis and Co., check out Michael Spaulding now. Not Another Playne Jayne doesn’t waste any time showing the world the kind of music that they make. From the moment their first track, Only a Test, gets going with a pretty gloomy and dark mood, but it provides a bit of an introduction to the personalities of the guys in the band. The gloom and doom of that first track really sets up a cool contrast that explodes out of the gates when their second track, Welcome to the Void, gets going. I think it was the trio’s ability to go from really low to high energy in such a powerful way that really carried me through the whole album.

Brett Vogel - Never Giving Up

Brett Vogel - Never Giving Up

Brett Vogel’s second release, Never Giving Up, finds this Los Angeles based singer/songwriter at a crucial point in his development as a songwriter and musician. He’s a capable vocalist with an unusual voice that might not have enough accessibility for Top 40 radio or singing contests, but it’s the sort of voice that people return to time and again because you can identify with its frailty. Vogel doesn’t sound like a musician-superman who, with blonde actress girlfriend in tow, delivers stylish songs about love lost and found. Instead, Vogel sounds like an immensely talented interpreter but, ultimately, the guy living in the apartment across the hall. This isn’t a slight. In an age where celebrity, despite the Internet, seems more remote than ever, Vogel has a tangible quality that emerges strongly from his new album.

Score: 8 out of 10 stars

It’s a cliché, but they don’t make albums like this anymore. Jodi Krangle’s full-on invocation of the time when jazz vocalists dominated the pop music landscape, Time Will Tell, has superior production and top notch musicianship that one expects in this type of music. Her and the backing band closely adhere to the genre’s typical formulas and rarely deviate. The album is a mix of covers and original material, but the covers she’s chosen have marquee name recognition that call tremendous attention to themselves. Her voice is the central instrument on the album and the production highlights it accordingly.
