You never know what you’re going to get when you hit play. That was the case with D2S, but it was a pleasant surprise. “What You Gonna Praise For Him” was a surprise. When you see religious phrases in a title, you don’t expect to hear hip hop. That’s the beauty of worship though, everyone can be a fan of the man upstairs and it can be expressed in a variety of genres. When it comes to D2S, he’s a rapper for the Lord. Plus, it’s well done music - religious or not. As we move on to “Holy Spirit Fall On Me,” we hear a different side of this artist as a more traditional Gospel voice comes through at the intro. It’s less in your face as the last and a bit more what you’d expect - still good though. It still has that rap feel, but is more communal. Then “Love Song to Jesus” takes on a R&B tone as “Get Your Worship On” could be played in a club tonight and it wouldn’t be given a second thought. It’s a hype track that really makes the body move. Speaking of, “I Can’t Stand Still” has that same vibe going on and sounds like it would get the whole church on its feet. Mark McKinzie otherwise known in the music world as Deu M knows how to deliver a good time. His single “Dreamin’ of Mistress” has this upbeat R&B flow that allows for you to be taken over by the soul but also offers a beat to really get moving and grooving. With “Seduction” things are slowed down and his flare comes out and you know this man could use his voice to take over anyone if need be. While the slowed down jams are good, you can’t help when things are a little lighter like with “That Girl.” It’s still classic R&B but with a little bit of a bounce in its step. In the end one thing’s for sure - Deu M is a master of his craft and a true up and comer in the R&B game that should be taken seriously. It’s the perfect time of year for some good, heartfelt and lively music from Years of The Songs. What better way to kick off a review right after Daylight Savings Time than with “It’s Time for Springtime.” This is a great kick off to the review and time of year because the weather is clearing up and things are starting to begin anew. With “Melodies of Your Love” we slow it down and things take a serious turn. We continue on that same somber road with “My Heart’s Dead Without You.” When you first hear the Spring song and the melancholy ones, you just assume this guy is a singer-songwriter but he can rock and that comes through with “Your Love is Coming Around.” It’s not Metallica, but it does have more oomph to it than the other songs and has a very ‘70s rock feel to it. That same tone comes through again with “Sunday’s Brought Me Back.” With a blend of heart, belief and rock, Years of The Songs does his thing in a way that’s unique and something to check out for sure. Stephen Scholle’s “Rhymes with Folly Sampler” is a musical buffet with everything from folk to jazz-like elements. Saying sampler is a true testament of the wide variety this record offers. “Slovenian Bark” sounds like a mixture of old country Russia intertwined with new world Country. It has this very masculine voice saying words of farm life and it has a very folklore feel to it. With “Dancin Fingers, Dancin Toes” Stephen lightens things and the beat up with a song that title does not lie. What’s great about this is the that it takes you on a real ride. Musically it could fit in with classic Disney films like “The Aristocats.” It has a jazzy, cool cat demeanor. We then take the party down a notch with “You’re Dangerous.” Again, we get a new side of this artist. It’s like every time a song begins, a new musician walks out to entertain. We get another cool vibe with “Short Short Long.” What’s great about this one is that in its simplicity, it has the ability to really grab you with the beat. You’ll have that little hook in your head long after it’s said and done. David Arn – Walking to Dreamland

There aren’t many artists who can touch your heart and funny bone like Wayne Martin. It’s always nice to know who songs are written for. When it comes to “Slip Away,” the words were written by Martin with his wife in mind. It’s a lighthearted song that has a lot of cute elements. It sounds like it could sit on the shelf alongside music that Randy Newman sings. With “This Ring,” the music has a more somber tone. It’s not dismal but after the ways of the former, this one has a more serious tone to it. Then you listen to the words and it’s not sad, it’s mature and full of romance. Then we lighten it up again with “I Like Your Caboose.” It’s clear that while Wayne has this sense of romance and elegance in his lyrics, he can let loose and have fun with his words and music.
