Un5gettable - “Sorry”

This is an unlikely act with an unlikely name. Un5gettable has its roots in longstanding personal relationships and musical theater, but its primary thrust is the unique concept of five men, decidedly not teenagers, parodying boy band acts like Backstreet Boys and One Direction, among others. Their self-deprecating presentation gives them a defining personality that vocal and musical chops are quite capable of backing up. Musical parody acts aren’t traditionally so high concept. The dominant styles, either raunchy or drug-related humor, aren’t present at all in the lyrics for the band’s latest single “Sorry”. Instead, the lyrics are essentially a musically arranged shaggy dog story about a hapless narrator’s mistakes in love. It isn’t songwriting wasting time while trying to make a connection – the story is clear and its delivered without any self-indulgence. 

Cody Webb - More than a Little

Cody Webb, in his new single More Than a Little, “burns the porch light out” with his cute, vivid and fluttery zoom-in on the start of a contemporary fairy tale. The instrumentation is not too elaborate, but just right; setting stage for the soft lights, subtle gestures and the build-up to a moment that will forever be idealized.

His voice has a subtle twang to it, lending a freshness to lyrics such as “bye bye my heart, hello your lips”/I know where I’m headed after this kiss (…) more than a little in love with you.” It is as starry-eyed as a Disney soundtrack, and yet, surprisingly grounded too. The words are simple and sung with no frills whatsoever. It is easy to forget how effortlessly, and artfully they are strung together. It is the kind of ease that comes with playing the guitar since age eight, and performing all over the country!

Corinne Cook’s Dressed Up for Goodbye is a great collection of songs that reflect different phases of anyone’s uncertain love life. Many of its tracks are written by The Warren Brothers, who have co-written hits for several country greats. Each song has a cosy grip on you and when you listen closely, makes you feel like you have been in a similar place far too many times. The album has a song for every emotion and mood, from irrevocable love, passion, crush, heartbreaks, to undeniable pain. Cook’s vocals, too, are the perfect medium to tell these stories, and make you feel a part of the ride.

Corvaa – Zipper

There’s a lot of competition in the music industry these days when it comes to house (or trap) music. “Zipper” by Corvaa is the upbeat song you’d expect to hear at many popular late night dance clubs, so it can definitely hold its own against the rest. It immediately struck my attention from the very first beat, and once the lyrics joined the mix, I was hooked.

Lena Fayre - “Cry” single review

Lena Fayre has released two singles since her 2014 full length release Oko. The first, “This World”, scored big with fans of piano driven ballads, but her latest single “Cry” targets a much different audience. This track finds Fayre indulging in a much more outright pop oriented approach with drum machines and a stark arrangement relying on the contrast between chorus and verse for much of its musical effects. The other key part of the song’s musical equation is Fayre’s voice and she abandons the extended vocal lines of the earlier single in favor of a terser approach on the new song. She never sacrifices the vocal melody in favor of this approach, however. Instead, there’s something a rougher edge here than one hears in her much of her earlier work and that sound is likely attributable to the song’s content.
